The Central Applications Office (CAO) has officially opened the application cycle for the 2027 academic year as of March 1, 2026. For students planning to study in KwaZulu-Natal, the CAO is the essential “one-stop-shop” that allows you to apply for up to six different programmes at various institutions using a single form and a single fee.
Which Institutions are Covered?
By applying through CAO, you can access the following member institutions:
- University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
- Durban University of Technology (DUT)
- Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT)
- University of Zululand (UNIZULU)
- Private Colleges: Including AAA School of Advertising, Berea Technical College, MANCOSA, Regent Business School, and more.
🎓 Student Desk Expert Guide: CAO 2027 Hacks
Don’t just apply—apply smart. Here is how to maximize your chances of an offer:
- The “Order of Preference” Rule: Institutions see your choices in the order you list them. Some universities, like MUT, give preference to applicants who list them as their 1st choice. Place your “dream” course first, but ensure your 5th and 6th choices are solid “backup” options.
- Winning the Bursary Draw: CAO is running a promotion for 2027. If your completed application and fee reach them by 31 May 2026, you are entered into a draw for a R25,000 bursary. Later deadlines (June, July, Sept) have smaller prize draws.
- The “Change of Mind” Fee: If you submit your application and later want to change your courses, it will cost you an extra R140. Take your time to read the 2027 Handbook before you submit to save money.
- EasyPay for Speed: While you can pay online, using an EasyPay outlet (Pick n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite) is often the fastest way to get your payment cleared and your application sent to universities.
