🚀 Student Desk Expert Insight: What is a Phlebotomy Technician?
Many students confuse this with nursing, but it is a specialized laboratory career.
- Beyond the Needle: A Phlebotomist doesn’t just “draw blood.” You are trained in complex laboratory procedures, patient safety, and the “Cold Chain” process—ensuring medical samples stay at the right temperature from the patient to the lab.
- HPCSA Registration: This is the most valuable part of the deal. Being registered with the HPCSA means you are a licensed medical professional. This allows you to work in private hospitals, government clinics, or international pathology labs.
- The “Pure Maths” Rule: Ampath is very strict about this. You must have Pure Mathematics (60%+). If you took Mathematical Literacy, your application will unfortunately be disqualified automatically by the system.
