Lancet Laboratories Internship Programme 2026

Lancet Laboratories, a leader in diagnostic pathology, offers two primary pathways for South African graduates and school leavers to enter the medical sciences: the Student Phlebotomy Technician Learnership and the Biomedical Technology Internship.
These programmes are designed to address the shortage of skilled healthcare workers in South Africa by providing high-quality, HPCSA-accredited training within a world-class laboratory environment.

- Closing Date: Varies by reference number; usually September for the main Phlebotomy intake and rolling for specialized lab internships.
- Type: Structured Workplace Learning with a Monthly Stipend.
🚀 Student Desk Expert Insight: The Phlebotomy vs. Med Tech Path
Lancet provides distinct career paths based on your current education level. Here is how they differ:
- Phlebotomy Technician (Learnership): This is for you if you only have a Matric. You will be trained to draw blood and collect non-blood specimens. It is a 2-year commitment that ends with an HPCSA board exam.
- Medical Technologist/Scientist (Internship): This is for graduates who already have a National Diploma in Biomedical Technology or a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science. This 12-month internship is the final step required for professional registration with the HPCSA.
- The “Own Transport” Rule: Lancet specifically notes that learners are responsible for their own accommodation and transport. Because labs operate on shifts (including nights and weekends), having a reliable way to get to the lab is essential.

How to Apply (S-CUBED Portal Guide)
Lancet does not accept emailed CVs for these programmes. You must use their S-CUBED e-Recruitment portal.
- Create a Profile: Visit the Lancet Recruitment Portal and click “Register as Individual.”
- Upload Your Pack: You will need certified copies (not older than 3 months) of:
- Your South African ID.
- Matric Certificate (for Phlebotomy).
- Tertiary Transcripts and Degree (for Med Tech).
- Search for Vacancies: Use keywords like “Intern,” “Student,” or “Learner” in the job search tab.
- Shortlisting: If you pass the initial screen, you will be invited for a pre-assessment and a competency-based interview.
Pro Tip: Lancet values “Soft Skills” as much as grades. In your interview, emphasize your empathy and patience. Phlebotomists often deal with nervous or distressed patients; showing that you can remain calm and professional under pressure is a massive advantage.
