The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa’s premier scientific research organization, is officially recruiting for its 2026 Bioprocessing Internship. Located in Pretoria, this role sits within the Chemicals Cluster and offers a rare opportunity for high-achieving graduates to work on the research and development of innovative, competitive technologies.
This internship is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and industrial application, placing you at the heart of South Africa’s “Future Production” initiatives.
Quick Intake Overview
- Organization: CSIR (Chemicals Cluster)
- Location: Pretoria, Gauteng
- Target: Honours Graduates
- Closing Date: 29/03/2026
- Shift Work: Required (Morning, Afternoon, or Night shifts)
🚀 Student Desk Expert Insight: From Lab to Pilot Plant
Bioprocessing at the CSIR is not just about small-scale test tubes. It involves moving technologies into massive bioreactors. Here is why this role is a career-maker:
- Industrial Scale Experience: Most students only ever see a 1L or 5L flask. At the CSIR, you will be responsible for monitoring and sampling bioreactors ranging from 10L to 1000L. This “pilot plant” experience is extremely valuable for careers in pharmaceuticals, brewing, and green chemistry.
- The Shift Work Reality: Bioprocessing involves living organisms that don’t stop growing at 5 PM. The requirement to work night or afternoon shifts is a standard industry practice. Demonstrating your willingness to do this shows recruiters you are “industry-ready.”
- SOP Development: You won’t just follow instructions; you will help develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This is a critical regulatory skill used in ISO-accredited environments.
